Really, this didn’t take too long to do but with the holiday breaks and whatnot it looks like a lot on the calendar. It was nice doing one by an artist I wasn’t all that familiar with, as Vettriano was recommended to me by a coworker. He was actually born Jack Hoggan and is Scottish. Didn’t see that coming. His work seems very classic, as if he’d be from the 50s or something but he broke through in the late 80s, early 90s. I love that his work doesn’t have that pretentious feel of trying to re-invent the wheel, mixing tons of media together in a post-modern mess just to call it ‘new.’ Sometimes, a nice clean style with an interesting subject or composition will do just the trick. That leads me to my next choice, the granddaddy of American illustration, Norman Rockwell. Still not sure which one to try yet. The issue with Rockwell is the portrait orientation, which severely limits the size and amount of detail I can work in. I love his work though, so I’ll give it a shot anyway. One thing I’ll have to remember is to do a post on Saturday night so it will be a Saturday Evening Post. Heh. Groan. Rimshot.
