Cubicleism. This is my cube. There are many others like it but this one is mine. It is important to do something to personalize your cube so it can be unique, just like everyone else.
This is how I choose to do it. Do some art, erase the hell out of it, and do some more. Rinse. Repeat.
In case you were wondering…
1. I only do this for about 5 minutes a day, usually first thing while the computer is firing up. I don’t spend all day doing this as I’d like to keep my job. 🙂 Some days I don’t even touch it.
2. They average taking about 6 weeks to finish. Slow going but it’s a good exercise in patience.
3. I buy my own markers so I’m not depleting our company’s dry erase marker supply.
4. I’m not using any special markers, just your run of the mill Quartet, Marks-a-lot, etc.
5. It’s less painful erasing them than you think… I’m usually excited to get to the next one.
6. Always looking for requests and ideas.

Dang. I thought I was being original. I defined cubicleism as art made in an office setting with items found in an ordinary office–sticky notes, highlighter markers, sharpies, glue sticks, paper clips, staplers, etc.. I started out with a sticky-note gallery and I am working with used cds now.

About that mythical gray dry-erase marker – how do you get the range of grays? I’m a UX designer and with all the whiteboard diagramming I do, a set of grayscale dry-erase markers would rock my world.
And would rock mine as well. I’ve had to get creative to get my grays. I never throw out a marker because the ones that are close to dying are the best ones. When I get one that isn’t giving me a good solid black, I’ll start baring down hard with it. It gets rid of some of the ink as well and destroying the chisel tip shape. That allows me to get wide strokes of even gray. I also use things like hatching and pointillism techniques to trick the eye into seeing gray. If you find a gray dry erase marker, do let me know!
Ah, thanks for the tip. I saw your post about using Prismacolor grayscale markers at home and thought I might be missing something. You’re making me think about crappy dry-erase markers in a whole new way.
I’ll keep up the search, in any case… keep up the good and inspiring work.

Data Manager computer guy. I do this for less than 5 minutes each day, if at all. It’s taken over 2 years to get 17 done so believe me when I say that it’s slow going and I’m not spending big chunks of my time doing it. It looks like a lot when you see them all side by side, but to me it’s just drawing an area the size of a fist each day. Thanks for checking out the site!

Heck yeah! And you have great taste, too! Looks like we’ve done some of the same works… In fact I was considering Girl With A Pearl Earring as well.
What happened was someone posted their whiteboard art on Reddit, and I thought yours deserved to be seen as well. I did not expect it to blow up the way it did, but that’s the nature of Reddit. Some days it’s Cubicleism, some days it’s cats. I guess when your post is a response to something that’s already on the front page, it gets noticed. I’m very happy that I could do something cool for a cool guy.

I would love to see you do a Jack Vettriano piece. Possibly, his most famous… The Singing Butler. I enjoy his works because they seem as if you’re given a glimpse of a single moment right in the middle of some intense (possibly scandalous) storyline. Kinda like starting a Film Noir/Humphrey Bogart movie at the 45 minute mark…
Or anything by Salvador Dali. Would love to see how his acid-induced looking, alternate universes look through the medium of dry-erase markers!
Nevermind… just looked through your older entries and saw the Vettriano….VERY NICE! Would still love a Dali… that is, unless you’ve already done one and I’ve overlooked it like the Vettriano 🙂
